I know, they are cute and are supposed to keep babies from hurting themselves in their cribs but the reality of these bumpers is, sadly, a different one.
First off, we never used those in the family so it never crossed my mind whether they’re dangerous or not until I learned about them in midwifery/obstetrics classes when talking about SIDS.
There are two main reasons why crib bumpers are a danger for infants:
- they cause heat to dam up in the crib which can lead to an overheating. Even though the reasons for SIDS aren’t fully discovered yet it’s been known that accumulated heat in cribs can be one of the reasons
- they carry a potential risk of suffocation, strangulation, or entrapment because infants lack the motor skills or strength to turn their heads should they roll into something that obstructs their breathing
I really hope more parents learn about this issue in the future because as cute as crib bumpers may be, they’re definitely not something that should be on the shopping list of (first time) parents!
